Area of Refuge: Emergency Evacuation Space

An "Area of Refuge" is a fire-resistant, smoke-protected space designed to provide safety during an emergency evacuation. Some requirements for an Area of Refuge are it must have direct access to an exit stairway, feature a two-way communication system, include clearly marked signage, and be spacious enough to accommodate a wheelchair. This space allows individuals with mobility limitations to wait for assistance without obstructing other escape routes and should be positioned near an emergency exit path.

When is Area of Refuge Required?

Area of Refuge system requirements vary by state, county and local city/town building codes, ordinances, and regulations. National codes like the International Building Code (IBC) and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) provide baseline standards, however, local jurisdictions may adopt modifications, stricter requirements, or unique provisions depending on local regulations or interpretations. It is vital for building owners or managers to check local building codes or place an inquiry with their Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) as to when an Area of Refuge is required—ensuring compliance.

Aside from code compliance, Area of Refuge solutions are an important element of building safety for individuals needing a safe space to wait for assistance during emergencies, such as fire evacuations.
